Rogers Tests Positive For Steroids ! ! ! Out Of Tour? ?

Well, doesn't that sound like the headlines of the past 10 years of the Tour? Read on.....

We left you on the "Descent in to darkness" that was Axe Les Thermes. It is hard to describe how one moment you can be climbing in sunshine, only to reach a peak and cross over into a cloud of freezing mist, but that is the essence of the Pyrenees! When we reached the outskirts of Axe, Dave said something about his fingers getting itchy, and then his torso. Then he said "Look at my face !"

Turns out, Dave has been stung repeatedly by bees in the past week, and the one that got him on the side of the face coming down the mountain must have been the Queen! He started developing hives all over his torso, his face became a real mess, and all of a sudden we were in a race to find a hospital. France however, can have a rather relaxed health care system! The first hospital we found had a cadre of nurses smoking like chimneys outside the "Prevention" wing of the place, and no Emergency Room. After a few tense minutes involving broken French, a little creative map writing, Julie mentioned GPS. This got the girls quite excited, and a whole group of them materialized to see what was up. But we couldn't get the thing going quickly enough, so off we went with some vague directions including a tunnel, and the Buffalo Bill Grill!

Before too terribly long, we arrived in the hospital in the middle of nowhere and got Dave looked at. The look on the entry clerk's face was priceless when in reply to her inquiry for Dave's insurance card, Julie handed her the entire policy, written in English! (They won't be seeing any bill anytime soon !) Sometimes that dang insurance card is just too hard to find! After some oxygen, and prednisone, and an admonishment from the doctor that he would be testing positive if he were in competition, we finally got on our way again. Just in time to take in the grill, a hotel and some serious zzzz....zzzzz.....zzzzz...zzzzzz's ! ! !

  1. Do they a have a medication for "jonathan vaughters syndrome"? If they did, i'm sure it would come in the form of a steroid or be administered via blood transfusion.

I hope at least 1 person laughs at that joke. It really ties together the bee stings, the inability to finish a tour, and a hardcore stance against doping.

  2. Glad this story was funny (I laughed too) but the next one may not be if you have become allergic/sensitized to the bees vs just a lot of stings causing swelling. I hope they advised you to buy a epinephrine kit just in case you are sensitized and breathing becomes apparent with the next sting(s). PSP tells us that everyone in the office was laughing today with this story, too. ....jdk

  4. Jonathan Vaughter face was HUGE. I hope that didn't happen to you Dave. I told my wife that I was jealous. Now I am rethinking my decision. Maybe I will follow the Tour Of Missouri. Safer.

  5. Well...

Dave and Julie have had some additional delays, so this will have to do as a post. Freddy had to leave for Spain, and his replacement driver Gerry arrived from Canada. Gerry and Freddy rode around the world a few years back, and Gerry is a serious Francophile, so they couple are in good hands.
The adventurers will have a one day delay due to a mechanical, I'll spare the details, but fatigue can make the mind do funny things ! Dave is keeping his cool though, and will try to skip his last rest day to get back on schedule. Keep sending the encouragement!

  6. Haven't heard for a few days, what's up. Glad Gerry got there and my daughter is in good hands with the driving. To Dave - bee stings are not good. What did you do, run over a hive?

A day's rest will do you good.

Hang in there, both of you.

  9. Dave and Julie - unbelievable, unforgettable journey you are taking. So glad you've found some drivers to help out. I hope Julie is finally back to eating! Sorry the Ambien didn't work out, you must not have used the extra-strength version that Mitch gets a hold of.....we'll send some along on your NEXT trip. Which if I remember right, that will be the trip that is all about JULIE.....!!! Be safe. We continue to be inspired back here in Omaha by Lance AND Dave.
